A PD Partnership Profile: Alan and Cherry Zimmerman

During National Family Caregivers Month, we honor care partners to people with Parkinson’s. We thank them for their efforts to care for their loved ones and help PDF #EndParkinsons. This includes Cherry Zimmerman, care partner to her husband Alan who is a member of the PDF People with Parkinson’s Advisory Council. They reside in Knoxville, TN. We sat down with them to understand more about their PD partnership and the needs of Parkinson’s care partners.

The PD Partnership: A Care Partner’s Perspective

Do you think of yourself or your loved one as a “caregiver” in life with Parkinson’s disease? There are some people who identify with this term, but many others who do not, which is why when Rhona Johnson, a former member of PDF’s People with Parkinson’s Advisory Council (PPAC) coined the term “care partnership,” PDF thought it fit perfectly.

One in 43 Million: What Can PD Caregivers Learn from AARP’s Report?

Are you a care partner to someone living with Parkinson’s? You are not alone. In fact, PD care partners may have some experiences in common with 43 million other Americans who also help to care for loved ones. This information was shared last week, when the AARP joined with the National Alliance for Caregiving to report on the state of caregiving in the US. Together the groups reported on results from a nationwide survey which included responses from 1,250 caregivers who specifically care for adults living with a variety of illnesses such as cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.
