Five Easy Ways to Champion Parkinson’s Awareness Month

#EndParkinsonsHow can you help PDF end Parkinson’s disease? Join our team during April, Parkinson’s Awareness Month!

Here are five easy ways you can join the team, inspired by the efforts of PDF Champions — our grassroots fundraisers who are raising awareness and funds for Parkinson’s in communities across the US.

 1) Get Back to Basics

Looking for a fun way to bring together local friends and family to make a difference? Host a walk with members of your community like the Parkinson’s Support Group of the Mid-Hudson Valley, led by Chairwoman Nancy Redkey. Her support group has raised over $45,000 for PDF, which is hosting their sixth annual Walk Over Water in Poughkeepsie, NY, on Sunday, April 24. The support group also distributes PDF’s free educational materials to raise awareness about PD.  Another idea is to work with your favorite local businesses. For example, invite young professionals to enjoy post-work cocktails to benefit the cause by hosting a PDF Helping Hours.

2) Get Creative

Share your passion for music and the arts to inspire your community to support the Parkinson’s cause. David Eger, Ph.D., founding Co-chair of PDF’s People with Parkinson’s Advisory Council, hosts the Music for Parkinson’s Research concert each fall in Rye, NY, bringing together acclaimed musicians for a chamber music concert. His events have raised more than $500,000 since 2003. If you’re an artist, you can also host an art sale, like Dusty Harrington of Port Orford, OR, who raised more than $600 for PDF after selling his pastel paintings.

3) Challenge Your Campus

Students of all ages across the US have hosted a wide range of creative events from serving up pancakes to throwing pies for Parkinson’s. Rutgers University’s Craft to Cure community service organization is hosting a Craft Tea Café on Wednesday, April 6, featuring student performances and craft activities to raise funds and awareness.

4) Be Sporty

Find a race near you and go for a run in a PDF Champions jersey to honor someone special in your life! Alexandra Archuleta of San Ramon, CA, is honoring her grandfather by running the Oakland Running Festival’s Half Marathon this March to benefit PDF.

5) Use Business to Benefit the Cause

Business owners have sold everything from hoagies and empanadas to jewelry while offering a percentage of sales to benefit PDF. Dawn Judson of San Antonio, TX, and her company Bikini Offroad host an annual “Shake, Rattle and Crawl” at Hidden Falls Adventure Park in Marble Falls, TX, each April. The outdoor, four-wheeling event, which features a scavenger hunt, a raffle and dinner, has raised more than $16,000 for PDF since 2013.
