Everyone is ready to wear their heart on their sleeve for Parkinson’s after the Kids Only PD Awareness T-Shirt Design Contest! The contest illustrated how everyone, no matter their age, can help to make a difference in the fight against Parkinson’s.
Just last week, the public voted for, “Together we can fight Parkinson’s,” a design created by 7-year-old Mabel Johnson, from among six finalists (see all the designs in the slideshow below), to be featured on the official 2015 PD Awareness T-Shirt. Mabel’s design was among nearly 40 endearing designs submitted by children ages five to 15. The designs, most of which were drawn by hand, honored loved ones living with Parkinson’s disease, including parents and grandparents.
And, as PDF’s judges, who are also members of PDF’s Creativity and Parkinson’s Project, found out, narrowing down the field was no easy task.
- “It was such a tough call. The images were all adorable. Each drawing made me smile from ear to ear. I love art, especially when it’s created from a young heart! Thank you to PDF for letting me be a part of the fun!” said painter Cindy DeLuz of Lodi, CA.
- “It was so gratifying to view so many wonderful and heartfelt submissions. As you can imagine, challenging too, to ultimately select just six finalists! What a delight to have the opportunity to help select finalists to appear on PDF’s Awareness T-Shirt! Sincere best wishes to all of the artists who submitted their drawings for consideration,” added John Creveling, of Philadelphia, PA, a painter featured in this year’s PDF Creativity and Parkinson’s Calendar.
Mabel’s t-shirt design was created in honor of her maternal grandmother. The three tulips holding hands depicted in her drawing represent Mabel and her older brothers working together.
“Parkinson’s can make it hard for Mimi to do things sometimes. It is hard for her to hold things in her hand. I would like to help so Parkinson’s goes away,” says Mabel.
